Educational Background:

Dato’ Syed Alwi Bin Tun Syed Nasir studied law at Lincoln’s Inn, London, UK, where he obtained his Barrister-at-Law in 1979. He was subsequently called to the Malaysian Bar in 1980.

Experience:

With extensive experience in advising both foreign and local clients, Dato’ Syed Alwi’s principal areas of practice include Corporate Matters and Conveyancing. He has a wealth of experience in guiding foreign corporations in setting up businesses in Malaysia, forming joint ventures, and establishing other investment structures both locally and overseas. Dato’ Syed Alwi also assists Malaysian clients in expanding their businesses internationally.

He is highly skilled in drafting documents and negotiating in areas such as project finance, property finance, corporate banking, and retail banking. His expertise extends to advising, drafting, and negotiating commercial documents for transactions and business activities in housing development, manufacturing sectors, and property transactions.

Dato’ Syed Alwi’s commitment and experience in rescuing and restructuring ailing public companies, transforming them into viable and profitable enterprises, have instilled confidence in foreign investors to continue investing in Malaysia.

Career:

Dato’ Syed Alwi began his career at Bank Bumiputra (M) Bhd (now known as CIMB Bank Bhd) in Kuala Lumpur from 1970 to 1973, later serving as Branch Manager in Batu Pahat in 1974. He pursued his law degree in London in 1975, obtained his Barrister-at-Law in 1979, and was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1980. In 1981, he founded the law firm Messrs. Syed Alwi, Ng & Teoh, which was renamed Syed Alwi, Ng & Co. in October 2004.

In 1997, Dato’ Syed Alwi was appointed chairman of two public listed companies, Damansara Realty Bhd and Long Huat Group, specifically to rescue and restructure these struggling entities. His distinguished career also includes serving as the Honourable Consul of Jordan to Malaysia from 1989 until 1997, appointed by His Majesty, the late King Hussein of Jordan. Under his leadership, the firm has grown from a small legal practice to one of Malaysia’s most established long-serving law firms.
